We can’t wait until the Big Day on Crown Road! In the meantime, here’s the full unabridged version of local historian Martyn Day’s excellent local history piece, as featured in your Xmas 2015 issue of My St Margarets Magazine; a thought-provoking article with a personal reminisence at the end that will make you appreciate the things we have 70 years on…
Read an extended version of local historian Martyn Day’s article that appears in the Christmas ‘14 edition of My St Margarets magazine!
It’s coming at the end of the month and features competitions; gift-guides; lots of updates from artistic residents like Orleans House Gallery, Turner’s House and Twickenham Studios; a look at Christmasses past in our local history feature; recipes and Christmas thoughts from St Stephen’s and All Souls’ Churches; and much more!
The Great War started twice. The first time was on Tuesday 28th July 1914 when, following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by a Serbian nationalist, Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia. The second time was a
week later, on Tuesday 4th August 1914, when Britain declared war against Germany after their refusal to respect the neutrality of Belgium.
In this edition we celebrate one of the hidden treasures in St Margarets - The Turner House. Nestled away in Sandycoombe Road you’ll find an historical jewel of a property, steeped in history and oozing with creative atmosphere. We celebrate the work of the Great British Painter J.M.W. Turner in this edition and through some fascinating contributions we ponder on what life must have been like during Turners time.
The St Margarets Traders Association are currently planning the next edition of the My St Margarets Magazine. The edition intends to help support the Friends of the Turner House in St Margarets and to help raise funds and awareness of the challenges they face to complete the much needed renovations and repairs to the house.
Hello and welcome to this rather special edition of My St Margarets magazine.
For me, featured in this edition, are three must do visits - The Richmond Museum, Orleans Gallery and the Turner House. The twice yearly Fairs are so much fun and a good chance to catch up with friends and neighbours. This year’s Jubilee Fair in Crown Road on Sunday 3rd June sounds absolutely amazing. The fair is the traditional street fair that we all love and also a Jubilee celebration party. What could be better than enjoying the live music, street entertainers, the fun and games and then sitting down to a nice Jubilee tea with friends and neighbours!
Highlights in this edition include Martyn Day’s fascinating article about Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and I was really taken by Chas’s article on antiques, I am amazed at the prices being fetched by some of the Titanic memorabilia. The centre pages feature a recent shopping trip made by a very special visitor who seems to have thoroughly enjoyed her visit to St Margarets - with so many independent specialist shops everyone is at home in St Margarets.
Welcome to the Christmas 2011 edition of the St Margarets Magazine, our seventh edition so far! As our circulation has increased this year may I extend a warm welcome to new readers from Richmond, Twickenham and Isleworth. Please join with us in supporting our St Margarets community in all of its ventures, such as the summer and Christmas Fairs, and please enjoy taking advantage of the wide and varied shops and services we have to offer. Whenever possible please shop with the heart - the St Margarets Heart logo because where you see the heart you’ll find a trader who in turn does their bit for the community.
